Jo Broughton's images appear benign at first glance. The room of a teenage girl. After a physics session, the class is empty. Pink and blue balloons fill the space. But then you start to notice the little things. On the wardrobe, the dildo. The floor was covered with high heels and underwear. The lubricant bottle was discreetly tucked out of sight. They depict a time when gonzo radicalism was less important than replicating what now appear to be archaic sexual desires.
Broughton grew to like the studio's layout. The way sunlight would rush through the windows, illuminating what she refers to as "echoes of the mayhem" that the artists had left behind that day, gave her peace. "It was bizarre in some ways," she adds, "because I was in this area where I felt comfortable and welcomed, but other people saw it differently." In fact, at the time, Broughton felt more intimidated by the world outside the porn studio than by the one inside.
